SVG to DXF: what’s going on with units and scale?
This converter takes an SVG and generates a DXF you can open in CAD/CAM or laser software. It’s designed to help when you get customer artwork as an SVG but need a CAD-friendly file for quoting, nesting, and production.
Private by design
The converter runs entirely in your browser. Your file is read locally and the DXF is generated locally — nothing is uploaded to our servers.
Why SVG scale is ambiguous
SVG geometry is stored as coordinates in a “user unit” coordinate system. Those numbers don’t reliably map to real-world measurements unless you know how the exporting tool intended them to be interpreted.
- Some workflows treat units like points (often assumed as 72 points per inch).
- Web/CSS workflows often treat units like pixels (commonly 96 pixels per inch).
- Many tools can import SVG with a chosen DPI/scale, which changes the real-world size even if the SVG numbers don’t change.
Practical takeaway: if a customer sends an SVG, you almost always need one known dimension (overall width, height, or a reference feature) so you can scale it correctly. Use Step 2 to enter the intended size and generate a DXF at the correct scale.
Free and pro tools to prep artwork
Need to clean up a file before converting? Inkscape is a great free option for converting text to paths, simplifying geometry, and exporting clean SVGs. For laser workflows, many shops use LightBurn to import artwork, assign layers/operations, and prep jobs for the machine.
